Luminosity Indicators in the Uv Spectra of Type Ia Supernovae
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a complete sample of International Ultraviolet Explorer and Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet (UV) spectra of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) through 2004. We measure the equivalent width (EW) and blueshifted velocity of the minimum of the one strong UV feature, Fe II λ3250. We also quantify the slope of the near-UV spectra using a new parameter, the “UV ratio.” We find that the velocity of the Fe II line does not correlate with light-curve shape, while the EW shows distinct behavior for the slow and fast-declining objects. Using precise Cepheid and surface brightness fluctuation distance measurements of 6 objects with UV spectra observed near maximum light (a total of 12 spectra), we determine that the UV ratio at maximum light is highly correlated with SN Ia luminosity. A larger sample of UV spectra is necessary to increase the statistical certainty of these luminosity indicators and whether they can be combined with light-curve shape to improve measured SN Ia distances. متن کاملA High Intrinsic Peculiarity Rate Among Type Ia Supernovae
We have compiled a sample of 45 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search (LOSS) and the Beijing Astronomical Observatory Supernova Survey (BAOSS), and determined the rate of spectroscopically peculiar SNe Ia (i.e., SN 1986G-like, SN 1991bg-like, and SN 1991T-like objects) and the luminosity function of SNe Ia. Because of the nature of the two surveys (dist...
متن کاملReflections on Reflexions: II. Effects of Light Echoes on the luminosity and spectra of Type Ia Supernovae
In this paper we present and discuss the effects of scattered light echoes (LE) on the luminosity and spectral appearance of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe). After introducing the basic concepts of LE spectral synthesis, by means of LE models and real observations we investigate the deviations from pure SN spectra, light and colour curves, the signatures that witness the presence of a LE and the possi...
